App architecture review

Make the next architecture decision with evidence.

When this is useful

Your app may be difficult to change without being obviously slow. Ownership can be unclear, deployments tightly coupled and data boundaries accidental. This review is useful before splitting a service, introducing a new dependency or committing to a substantial architectural change. It examines one application boundary and one decision; it does not prescribe a fashionable architecture.

  • A small product change touches many unrelated components.
  • The team is weighing a service split, event-driven flow or new datastore.
  • Failure ownership and data consistency expectations are unclear.

What you receive

  • Dependency and responsibility map
  • Risk register + architecture decision record
  • Staged change proposal

What’s included

  • Map one application boundary and its directly connected systems.
  • Review the relevant code paths, deployment topology and data ownership.
  • Assess one agreed decision against changeability, failure handling and operational constraints.
  • Produce a risk register with observations separated from hypotheses.
  • Deliver a decision record, staged change options, one review call and one factual-correction round.

Schedule & agreement

Draft planning assumption: 5–7 business days after the application boundary, decision, safe inputs and delivery slot are agreed. Commercial scope is subject to review.

Currency, tax treatment and final scope are agreed before work starts. Implementation and ongoing support are scoped separately.

What’s outside the check

  • An organisation-wide enterprise architecture programme.
  • Production changes, complete rewrites, migrations or stress testing.
  • Formal security certification or a guarantee that one architecture fits every future requirement.

Access we’ll agree

Agreed read-only code and architecture access, deployment diagrams, the upcoming decision and current constraints. Sanitised incident notes can provide context. No production write access is needed for the initial review.

From diagnosis to a scoped fix

A follow-on fixed-price package might separate one responsibility, add a defined boundary or implement one decision in stages. The change plan includes acceptance criteria and rollback; implementation is quoted after the review.

Questions before you start

Is this a code review?

Relevant code is evidence, but the question is architectural: responsibilities, dependencies, data ownership and operational trade-offs. A comprehensive line-by-line code review is outside this package.

Can we review a proposed design before building it?

Yes. Bring the current system, the proposed change and its constraints. The output compares plausible options and records the assumptions that need validation.

Have a specific problem?

Start with a useful question.

Describe the symptom and the outcome. We’ll define the boundary before quoting the work.
